About Me

I come from a background of public safety, through my work as an Emergency Medical Technician. After working EMS in the Boston area for a few years and finding my passion for mental health, I moved to Maine in 2003 and started my mental health career by earning a bachelor of science in psychology and a master's in mental health counseling. After gaining licensure as a Clinical Professional Counselor, I quickly found myself working in the specialty areas of crisis, trauma, and disaster response. My previous work experience led me to find interest in working with first responders, where I developed skills in conducting public safety debriefings, training law enforcement in crisis intervention, working alongside public safety members to assist those struggling with mental health issues in the community, and eventually building a private practice working with first responders and those recovering from trauma, on an outpatient basis.
With an eagerness to learn more about how to help others, I continued on to becoming a doctoral student in counselor education and supervision, with a minor in crisis and trauma. I started that journey in 2015 and am currently a Ph.D. candidate, working on a capstone research study, focusing on the psychological implications of working as a crisis clinician.
Aside from clinical work, I enjoy teaching, writing, and consulting on various topics of mental health. I work as an adjunct instructor in the Graduate Counseling program at Husson University in Bangor, Maine, where I help counseling students learn about topics such as crisis, counseling skill and technique development, and group dynamics.
I have developed a recent interest in ecopsychology and ecotherapy which is essentially about the relationship between being immersed in nature and its affect on psychological wellness.  I am slowly incorporating ecotherapy into my practice and excited to share my passion with others.

My Approach

My approach to working with people involves a spectrum of different methods. People learn very quickly that I am a neuroscience "geek" and like to use some basic neuroscience education to help individuals understand the biological basis behind thoughts, feelings, and behavior. Beyond neuroscience, I use a combination of Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, Constructivist Therapy, and Trauma-Informed Therapy. But, above all, my approach to people is to learn about them. People are their own experts, but it is easy to get "lost" in our own sense of self and direction when things when life gets overwhelming or confusing because there is so much going on internally. My job is to help guide you through your ideas and experiences until it makes sense again. Knowledge, support, and self-reflection are the tools that are used to get back on track.
